Frequently Asked Questions

  • United is not a club, but rather a collaboration of three clubs — Corte Madera FC, Mill Valley SC, and Tiburon Peninsula SC.

We formed the United program to continue to provide a quality competitive soccer experience for local players as they move from smaller-sided youth games at our respective clubs to 11v11 play at ages U13 and above.

The clubs host United teams as cohorts, keeping players together by birth year and gender, with all teams sharing the United name.

  • United players benefit from our three host clubs’ expert coaching, high-quality programming, and convenient practice locations.

United also offers multi-sport athletes the flexibility of playing soccer at a challenging competitive level while continuing to play other sports in the off season. Winter and spring soccer programming is available to interested players as well.

  • United tryouts take place in late spring (within NorCal’s tryout window) in Corte Madera, Mill Valley, and Tiburon. Interested players should plan to attend as many tryouts as they can.

Online registration for tryouts is available through each of the three United clubs.

Players who were affiliated with a United club the previous season should register via that club (Corte Madera FC, Mill Valley SC, or Tiburon Peninsula SC).

Players who did not play for Corte Madera FC, Mill Valley SC, or Tiburon Peninsula SC the previous season can register via any of the three clubs.

  • During the tryout period, the coaches and Directors of Coaching (DOCs) of the three United clubs work together to assess boys and girls for each United age group.

At the completion of the tryout process, all players who earn roster spots will be selected to player pools for their age group, rather than teams. (There may be some exceptions to this, depending upon the tryout pool.)

Player pools (e.g., 2012 girls) will have one to three sessions of optional training in late May–early June, and United’s coaching staff will assign all players to teams at the end of this training period. Some older age groups may include players from more than one birth year, depending on the depth and quality of the player pool.

Players will not be allowed to participate in optional training and will not be assigned a roster spot unless they have registered and paid.

We recognize that players develop at different rates and that significant changes in soccer ability, physical growth, and mindset can occur in the two or three months after tryouts. Accordingly, United coaches and DOCs will continue to assess team placements up until the end of August. Occasionally, a player may be invited to “play up” on an older team if that best serves the player’s development.

Our goals are to provide a competitive team opportunity for as many ability-appropriate players as possible and to find the best training and playing fit for each player to have a successful season.

  • The Directors of Coaching of the three United clubs work together, following guiding principles, to match teams with clubs. These principles include: keeping all teams formed for a particular birth year and gender cohort together within the same club; maximizing opportunities to offer spring programming to interested players; reflecting incoming player proportions from each club; and minimizing the rotations of cohorts among clubs. The United clubs have agreed upon a three-year hosting plan for 2024–2026.

Players who accept United roster spots must be willing to practice and play games in Corte Madera, Mill Valley, and/or Tiburon. Practice schedules are designed to accommodate school hours and transit times from neighboring towns.

  • Registration fees and full-season costs for United team players can range from $1,400 to $2,200.

Players who qualify for need-based financial aid may apply through their host clubs’ programs.

  • United teams will have training camp in early August and then start the competitive season.

During the fall season, United teams typically train twice a week and play games each weekend. Teams may also participate in tournaments on certain weekends.

Teams with high school–aged players will finish their seasons by the start of high school tryouts in November. Other teams will finish their regular seasons in November or December.

  • For all U13 and older teams, NorCal’s State Cup calendar no longer finishes in December or January. Instead, it becomes year-round, beginning in September and finishing in April or May.

United teams may participate in NorCal’s State Cup provided that the players from a given team opt in to committing to this competition calendar. United will poll teams early in the summer to assess interest and commitment.
